Most of my compositions for the book have been very "BAM! ANIMAL IN YO FACE!" but with the white tailed deer, I decided to push them into the background a bit. They're the quintessential prey animal; something always wants to kill them, whether a predator or a game hunter (hence why the shadows here are blood red), so I depicted them as I remember seeing them as a kid. Wary, pleading, never quite trusting... but always with Dad not too far behind.
