Baby Appa Feltie by Steph-Laberis Baby Appa Feltie by Steph-Laberis
I have been getting a lot of traffic today from Reddit and some grumbles about the price I set for the Appas. Let me break this down to help you guys understand!

Time spent on each Appa: 10 - 15 hours, depending on pose and details.
Price: $150

Hourly rate: $10/hour - $15 hour, give or take.

After paying 30% self-employment tax to Uncle Sam: $7 - $10/hour

Minimum wage where I live: $8/hour

So while the final price appears so steep for something so small, I am not making much more than minimum wage for my effort! And that was OK - felting isn't my bread and butter and I enjoyed making Appas for people. I wasn't trying to rip anyone off, I just wanted some compensation for my time :)

:iconbpresing: I apologize for spoiling your surprise, I can't sit on this much longer! He doesn't have his final "accessory" just yet, but that will come in time. Baby Appa himself is effectively finished, he's got his back stripes and everything. I should have given him a wire armature to be able to pose those legs better, I think. Live and learn!

Will update once his sidekick is finished ;)

Edit: I've been getting a lot of requests to buy this little guy, so thank you very much for asking! While he's already going to a new owner, I want to put it out there that although he's small, he took many, many hours to complete and would be priced around $150. I don't mean to scare people off but I wanted to give a frame of reference.

Second Edit: You know, I was going to felt a very small Momo to sit upon Baby Appa's belly, but after two tries and two Momos that came out too big for this Appa, I give up. Baby Appa is done and is his own stand alone piece ;) I'll still finish one of the mini Momos and post that in its own time.

That's amazing. Don't let anyone tell you you're charging too much! Anyone who knows anything about handcrafted art knows how long and hard artist work to create original and custom masterpieces. You go girl!

These are adorable and I would love to try my hand at making one! If youre willing, could you possibly send a pattern? I completely understand if you wouldn't like to, and I wouldn't be making them for profit , just fun :)

Thanks so much! I would have no qualms about sharing a pattern if it were possible to make one. He's made by needle felting, which is more akin to sculpting than it is to knitting or sewing. Every piece I felt starts from a pile of loose sheep's wool and is shaped very gradually by tangling the fibers with a barbed needle. No stitches, no patterns, just intuition and time! Here's an example:

If you want to learn to needle felt though, I suggest going to livingfelt.com to see their kits and tutorials!

Very cute Appa, love him :)

You shouldn't have to break down your price like that. It's your business and you know how much your time is worth!

Thanks! It's cool, there's confusion about how things work and most people aren't familiar with how long needle felting takes. I'd rather folks be informed than infuriated :)

Don't you hate how people think you should charge less for something that you spent a lot of time on creating, like somehow, it's not work?

Anyway, I saw this through the "What's Hot" feature and just had to say, this is pretty fantastic. I do a little bit of felting, but not to this degree. And I love Appa. :) If I could justify spending the money you request for him, I would in a heartbeat.

Super cute!

Cheers to that! It's something I will hear from people until the day I drop, but as you know, our time has value. I broke down the hourly rates to the folks on reddit who thought it was a rip-off but never heard replies. *shrug*

Thank you so much for the kind words about Appa though! I can tell you're an artist who values time and effort and it's deeply appreciated. Yip yip!

Lol, I knit and crochet for fun and those things alone are time consuming, so yes, I am aware of how much effort goes into making something.

I felted a hat a while back for a costume. It was a tiny top hat, but man, even for a tiny top hat, it took forever to get the material to felt (and it was 100% wool, too). That was the first project I ever did that required felting and I thought I might never do it again for all the work it took to get everything to work right. I can only imagine having to felt tiny pieces or having to sew an entire thing together and then felting it and working to get it to felt correctly.

Maybe you just have a technique established that is easier than the things I tried, but still. It's a lot of work!

I see all these fantastic creatures and such felted and would love to give it a try, but unfortunately have no idea where I would start. So for now, I knit, crochet, draw and sew. :P

Bonus points to you for the "Yip, yip" reference. :)

oooh, do you have any of your fabric art online? I find that smaller pieces somehow take longer to felt too, even though there's less material to deal with. The technique I use is the same as any other needle felter - stab, stab, repeat. Sometimes I form a shape before attaching it to the larger piece, sometimes I attach and form it, but there's really nothing special besides patience.

If you want to pick up a starter kit, go to lilvingfelt.com and see if anything strikes you. Though my first felting experience was with a little penguin kit and I was sooooooooooo frustrated that I swore I'd never felt again. Good thing I lied to myself!

Alas, no. Most of them were gifts I gave away or are more in the vein of crochet/sewing/knitting (so nothing special).

I find myself doing that a lot.. swearing I will never do 'x' again and then two weeks later, I am back at it. Most of it is related to artistic endeavors, but not all. Ha ha, funny how that works.

I will take a look at the site and see if I can find something to get me started. I really like knitting small stuffed animals (even if working with DPNs are a pain), but can't say I have hand-felted a small one. :)
